Top in class: Calgary area celebrates residential building industry leaders

It was a night of real-time handshakes and hugs on April 30 as the Building Industry and Land Development (BILD) Calgary Region celebrated excellence in home building, renovation and community development.

For the first time since 2019, the BILD Calgary Region Awards Gala was held in person at the Telus Convention Centre, with 61 winners crossing the stage to receive awards.

There were more than 500 entries jostling for awards in 55 categories, with many hopefuls looking to take home one of the six Grand Awards, which were determined by submission rankings across all categories.

The 2021 Builder of the Year Grand Awards went to Morrison Homes, Single Family Large Volume; Logel Homes, Multi-Family Large Volume; Riverview Custom Homes, Single Family Small Volume; and Renova Homes and Renovations, Multi-Family Small Volume. Renovator of the Year was Ultimate Renovations, and Partner of the Year was Marsh Canada.

Morrison’s Grand Award was a consecutive win for the large volume builder and its 15th overall. The builder had 14 nominations for projects completed in 2021, its 60th anniversary year.

“I have the privilege of accepting this award on behalf of a lot of great people,” said Al Morrison, chairman of Morrison Homes. “Not only our talented team, but also our dedicated trade, supplier and developer partners who help us deliver on our promise to deliver quality homes and building experiences for our customers. It’s a true honour to be named Builder of the Year for an unprecedented 15th year, and it is a testament to our collective effort of putting the needs and desires customers first in all we do.”

It was a second Grand Award in as many years for Logel Homes, coming into the competition with 12 nominations.

“In 1995, I was the sales and marketing manager for Cardel Homes, and I worked hard that year to win Single Family Builder of the Year. We tied with Jayman Built. That was the last time I was up on the stage for that award,” said Tim Logel, CEO of Logel Homes, referencing the fact that there were no in-person awards in 2019 and 2020. “That’s how difficult it is to win and when it happens, it almost feels surreal.”

Logel applauded the team at Logel Homes for a successful showing and a remarkable year of sales.

“It’s a thrill and a joy for me to work with them — the best team I’ve worked with in my time in home building, which is now 40 years,” he said, adding that for 23 months in a row now, Logel has sold a condo a day.

In addition to the Grand Award, Riverview Custom Homes took to the stage four times to receive its Grand Award and three others, including one for Best New Home $2.3 million and over, a category in which it was the sole nominee. Riverview, led by president Christopher York, has won the Small Volume Single Family category multiple times.

Renova Homes and Renovations also garnered three awards in addition to its Grand Award. President Justin Mauro said it’s always an honour to be recognized by industry peers.

“I must admit, I didn’t expect to win. We’re just getting into multi-family development and completed our first project,” he said. “We’re very excited that our homes are noticed by the judges and selected for awards. I definitely need to thank my team here at Renova. We have all put our blood, sweat and tears into all of our projects. We also have to thank our valued trade and supplier partners who work along side us to make our vision a reality.”

Ultimate Renovations had another banner year, winning Renovator of the Year for the 12th time since it first entered the awards contest in 1998.

“We were all surprised. We must have had a lot of second-place finishes,” said Ultimate co-founder and president Danny Ritchie.

Ultimate had nominations in seven categories, winning just one for Best Home Renovation With Addition. The renovation was a complete overhaul, which included raising the roof by three feet. The home will be open to the public on May 28.

Partner of the Year was awarded to Marsh Canada, a global insurance broker and risk adviser.

In the developer awards, Brookfield’s Rockland Park in the northwest was named 2021 New Community of the Year. Seton, in the southeast, won Best Community, Calgary for the second year in a row.

“There were so many incredible communities nominated this year, we were delighted to win for Rockland Park and Seton. Creating vibrant communities has always been our passion and our team is constantly pushing the boundaries of innovation. We focus on designing healthy communities, which begin with thoughtful planning that inspires activity and social connections for our residents,” said Mary Aucoin, marketing manager for Brookfield’s Alberta communities.

Community of the Year in the Calgary Region went to Harmony in Springbank, a rural development by Bordeaux Developments and Qualico Communities. Founded in 2016, this is the fifth time Harmony has claimed this Grand Award.

“Winning for the fifth time speaks to what an amazing community it is,” said Nina Wulder, Qualico marketing and communications co-ordinator. “Qualico Communities Calgary is thrilled to be a part of the development of this amazing community and acknowledges all of the people that contribute to making this community great.”

“Harmony’s vision has been a collaboration of many stakeholders from our team, our partner Qualico Communities, our builders, members of the community and Rocky View County,” said Birol Fisekci, president and CEO of Bordeaux Developments. “It is a great honour to have our team’s dedication to bringing the community’s vision to life recognized by our peers.”

The 2021 Show Home Parade of the Year was award to Section23 Developments for Phase 1 of its new Rangeview community in the southeast.

Other gala highlights include hardware presentations to Jayman Built, winning five of its seven nominations including an Industry Achievement Award/Best Innovation for its Quantum Performance Ultra E-Home, the builder’s first net zero project.

Multi-family builder Minto Communities received four awards for its East Hills Crossing development, and Graywood Developments garnered two trophies for its luxury condo development in Eau Claire, First & Park, including Best Multi-Family Community Concept.
